This week Farm Weekly released their expert breakdown for the 2022 crop outlook. While the cost of canola has peaked at more than $1,000 a tonne, exporting grains in the current economic client is proving to be fraught with difficulties, particularly in relation to freight costs and labour shortages. Some price softening is expected globally as new crops come into play throughout the year. Regarding the wheat outlook, much depends on whether the Russian export system (which currently implements a tax-based export) will continue into 2022.
Continuing on the theme of labour shortages, many farmers I’ve been speaking with are feeling the impact of this year’s harvest staffing shortages. Many of our agribusiness clients are beginning to consider the importance of investing in their people, to make their farm an ‘employer of choice’. Processworx provides HR consultancy to farms here in Esperance, and some of you may have met Danielle McNamee when she presented in Esperance on new workplace safety legislation.
I also just want to reiterate the importance of getting your super paid on time, (I know I’m probably starting to sound like a broken record to many of you!). We have seen increased audit activity by the ATO in the Esperance region. Due to the extensive reporting now required regarding super obligations and payments, it’s easy for the ATO to detect any anomalies.
With Christmas coming up, many of us are organising workplace Christmas parties. I’ve included a few of my top tips for you below.
Best wishes,
7th December 2021
While the cost of canola has peaked at more than $1000 a tonne, exporting grains has become riddled with difficulties and, unfortunately, has not offset high shipping prices
This year has highlighted labour shortages for many farmers. Work usually done by uni students, backpackers and international workers has been left for farmers to pick up along with their existing load.
There are many things to remember when paying superannuation for your employees; but knowing the difference between super guarantee (SG) and the SG charge may just be the most important.
